All You Require To Know About Submersible Pump

There are different types of pumps available in the market, submersible being one of them. These pumps can be fully submerged in water. Their motor is hermetically sealed and it is close-coupled to the pump’s body. These pumps help to push the water to the surface by converting rotary energy to kinetic energy and then to pressure energy. The process involves pulling the water into the pump, and then through the impeller, the water is pushed through the diffuser. Then the water goes on to the surface.

The submersible pumps do not need to be primed as they have already been submerged into the fluid. They are quite efficient as you would not have to spend a lot of energy to move the water to the pump. The overall water pressure pushes the water into these pumps, which in turn, helps to save a lot of energy.

A submersible pump might not be quite versatile, but depending on the selection, some pumps can easily handle solids or while others are good for liquids only. One of the top features of these pumps is that, unlike other pumps, they are quite as they are present underwater. However, as they stay in water for quite some time, their seals might get corroded with time. As a result, water would seep into the motor making it dysfunctional until repaired. Also, because of the seals, these pumps are slightly difficult to repair.

However, it is essential to note that these types of pumps are not fit for all usages. The single-stage ones are used for residential and light industrial purposes, like in aquarium tanks, drainage sump pumps, etc. Also, an important point to note while using these pumps is that they should be fully submerged in water during operations. This is essential as the water helps to cool the motor of the pump. If not, the motor can get overheated and cause accidents.

The submersible pumps can be used for a wide range of applications, like:

  • Sewage treatment- For this, grinder pumps are needed which can transport solid material from the inlet to the discharge without any obstructions. These pumps help to reduce the sewage material to smaller particles, which helps in easier and more effective handling.
  • Wastewater- The pumps are widely used in the grit and wastewater industry. These pumps are compact and their cost of installation is quite less.
  • Sump pumping- These pumps also help to remove water that has been accumulated in the low-lying area or pit, wherein the water can collect. These are used in various mining operations.
  • Wells- These pumps are also used in boreholes and wells to lift water to the surface. These pumps can be easily found in the oil industry and used for lifting oil from deep wells to the surface.

Thus, depending on the capacity of a given submerged pump, it can be used for different applications. Their pumping speed and energy usage factors should also be considered to choose the right pump that would cater for your needs.
